Bacon Double Cheeseburger
This greasy snack is ok once in a while for lunch, but if you’re choosing to eat one before bed then get ready for a restless night. Fatty fast foods produce a lot of stomach acid, which in turn causes heartburn. Maybe give that late night trip to the drive through a miss!
Many of us enjoy a little nightcap before bed, but studies have shown that even a small glass of vodka, bourbon or whiskey can increase the amount of time you stay awake by up to 15 minutes. And even your alcohol intake isn’t bothering you, then spare a thought for who you’re sharing your bed with. Alcohol makes your snoring worse, something that isn’t going to make you very popular in the bedroom.
It may make a great treat, but that bar of chocolate is rich in tyrosine, a chemical that your body converts into dopamine. Dopamine is used by the body to speed up your heart rate and give you increased awareness, resulting in a sleepless night. In fact, even thinking about chocolate can lead the brain to produce dopamine, meaning that any dreams involving Milk Tray are out of the question!
Spicy food in general is a bad idea before bed. Spicy food can cause indigestion, and leave you with a pretty restless night’s sleep in general. We all like a curry, but make sure you leave plenty of time for it to digest before you hit the sack otherwise you’ll be looking at a pretty disrupted night’s sleep.
Protein is not a good idea before bed, because it takes much longer to digest than other food groups. Because your body is focussing on digesting, not sleeping, you’ll find yourself lying awake staring at the ceiling. Mix things up with some carbs to aid the digestion and you’ll find it a lot easier to drop off.
Carbohydrates like rice and pasta are great to have before bed, but jasmine rice is particularly good because it has a high-glycemic-index. Foods with a high-glycemic-index help produce the sleep inducing chemical tryptophan. Turkey meat is also said to have large amounts of tryptophan, hence why we all like to take a snooze after lunch on Christmas Day!
A great way to guarantee a good night’s sleep is to drink a glass of cherry juice twice a day. Cherries contain high levels of melatonin, a chemical that helps your brain to switch off when you’re cosy in a dark room at the end of the day. Cherry juice has even been found to help people with severe insomnia to improve their sleep patterns.
Yoghurt and Milk
Dairy products are really beneficial to getting a good night’s sleep. You might remember being sent to bed with a warm glass of milk. Yoghurt has the same effect, as dairy products contain high levels of tryptophan, a chemical which we’ve already seen can leave you feeling drowsy and help you drop off quicker!
Bananas are packed with loads of great vitamins and minerals, that make them perfect pre-bed dining. The high-levels of magnesium and potassium that they contain act as muscle relaxants, and the vitamin B6 that they contain help to create serotonin increasing your relaxation.
Not only do chickpeas taste great, they are also full of vitamin B6, which helps to produce melatonin. Chickpeas make a great accompaniment to loads of foods, and they taste great on their own as well! With just one tin, some lemon juice, garlic and tahini you can create a delicious hummus dip!
