The Health Benefits of Sleep
Shakespeare described sleep as “chief nourisher in life’s feast”, and all these years later we think Will had it spot on! Getting a good night’s sleep is essential to keeping your body healthy. Here’s 5 ways in which a good night’s rest can help you to maintain a happy, healthy lifestyle and reap the health benefits of sleep.
Improve Your Memory
We’ve all been a student up late cramming for that big exam the next day. But we should have been doing precisely the opposite, and getting an early night! Studies have shown that sleep helps to improve your memory. During the night, even though you are totally asleep, your brain is busy working through all the new things that it has learnt that day meaning that when you wake up, everything has been stored.
Slow Down Inflammation
Inflammation usually occurs when the body is trying to heal itself, like when your finger swells up after you’ve trapped it in a door. This can be quite a good thing initially, but if your body keeps trying to cause further inflammation then it can be harmful to you. Sleep studies have found that those people who get less sleep have more inflammatory proteins then others, something that has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and arthritis.
Be A Better Athlete
The more sleep you get, the more time your body has to recover helping you to develop stronger muscles, quicker reaction times and more stamina. And when you’re trying to be the best athlete you can be, those things can make all the difference! You’ll perform a lot better up front for your local pub team if you get an early night, then if you have a night on the tiles!
Improve Your Attention Span
Sleep is particularly important for young children. A lack of sleep makes the child restless, which in turn makes it difficult for them to focus in school or at home. Often this results in ADHD-like symptoms, which really are just due to a lack of shuteye. And the same goes for adults. Struggling to focus at work? Then you need to get more sleep!
Stop Your Stressing
As a society we’re definitely becoming more stressed. Sometimes, stress can be a good thing but most of the time it leads to heart disease, over-eating, high blood pressure and much more. By getting a good night’s sleep, you can make sure that you wake up relaxed, and ready to face the day!
We all like to burn the candle at both ends – a quiet evening out turns into a late night party, a few hours after dinner working turns into a late one finishing off that report and one more DVD turns into 5-6 episodes. But we don’t think about the effect it’s having on our bodies the next day.
If you’re finding yourself unable to concentrate, slow to react and feeling stressed in the morning (and into the afternoon), then you need to get more sleep!
